Vision, Mission and Aims

Description of the project

The general area in which the PhD in Clinical Sciences is located are Clinical Sciences and the biomedical experimental sciences with translational possibility in the clinical field.

These are scientific fields constantly evolving, also thanks to the speed with which techniques, (bio)technology and knowledge are developing. The Course integrates knowledge ranging from medical to surgical disciplines, through clinical and dynamic psychology. Research in these sectors takes place by integrating studies conducted in clinical populations, laboratories, and simulation environments. The research projects address highly topical fields, such as micro-invasive surgical techniques, the use of artificial intelligence, up to global health under the one health perspective. Addressing the challenges in this sector requires interdisciplinary figures with skills and employment prospects that range from basic research to healthcare eventually associated to health assistance.

Aims

The PhD Course in Clinical Sciences supports young researchers training and promotes their participation in interdisciplinary research projects. The organization of the Course in six distinct multidisciplinary curricula allows for trans- and inter-disciplinary training through research, tutoring, training and teaching activities that bridge the curricula. The program includes interaction with other researchers, pharmaceutical industries and biotechnologies, both at national and international levels, for the creation of networks of excellence to support the career development of PhD students. Training and research activities abroad are carried out:

a) at qualified research centres, thanks to collaborations also created using the large network of contacts           represented by the international members of the Course Board;

b) through participation in international conferences both as listeners and through the presentation of                posters or oral communications.

PhD Doctors, as First Stage Researchers according to the principles of the European Charter for Researchers , and in line with the Italian academic system, are supported in the development of their research career in order to acquire the skills necessary to carry out highly qualified research activities at Universities, public institutions and private entities and achieve excellence in research and innovation.

The PhD Course is structured to provide:

  1. adequate theoretical and applied preparation on innovation and research frontiers in clinical disciplines and in the most specialized disciplines (diseases caused by/with immune dysregulation; aging, cardio- and immuno-vascular medicine, emergency/urgency and nursing sciences; clinical and dynamic psychology; surgery, anaesthesiology and pain therapy; diseases caused by infectious agents and occupational medicine relevant to global health; diseases of the musculoskeletal system)
  2. adequate preparation on transversal skills , defined by the European Union as key skills for learning, having as reference areas: functional literacy skills; language skills; mathematical skills and skills in science, technology, and engineering; digital skills; personal, social, and learning skills; civic skills; entrepreneurial skills; skills in cultural awareness and expression
  3. learning opportunities on how to manage research and learn about European and international research systems through training activities on writing and data presentation techniques, presentation of projects to national and international competitive calls
  4. tools and mastery of the main IT systems needed for statistical analysis and data presentation
  5. in-depth specialist seminars provided by national or international experts on the topics of the curricula, with reference to the latest acquisitions in the physio-pathological and diagnostic-therapeutic fields
  6. internship opportunities at Italian and foreign research institutions and at public institutions in the workplace where the methodologies and skills acquired in the research phase can be applied
  7. tools and mastery of the techniques for drafting scientific reports and research programs, and for effective communication of science and adequate valorisation of research and protection of intellectual property
  8. linguistic improvement through reading scientific literature in English, creating presentations of own work and data, and drafting scientific reports.

The teaching and training activity is structured both by encouraging interaction and collaboration among PhD students and by offering advanced courses aimed at acquiring numerical and statistical skills, techniques and data analysis and also thanks to the use of the most appropriate calculation and simulation tools
