Overview

 

The PhD in Clinical Sciences is a PhD programme based in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine. The PhD Course is characterized by a series of basic and translational research opportunities promoted by a wide and diverse scientific community composed by researchers working at the University of Florence o  at research or academic international highly qualified institutions.

The PhD Course offers a PhD teaching programme in the field of basic and translational research and  is organized in six curricula. The staff involved therefore works with qualified research groups that are actively engaged in the following sectors:

  • Clinical Pathophysiology and Pathophysiology og Aging, Emergency Medicine and Nursing Sciences;
  • Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Radiology;
  • Clinical Patology in Musculoskeletal System and Calcified Tissues;
  • Surgical Sciences;
  • Psychology, Occupational Medicine, Anesthesiology and Pain;
  • Therapyinfectious Diseases and International Cooperation, Global Health 

The topics are described in detail  here  and include immunology, inflammation, coagulation and rheumatology, intensive care, surgical and orthopaedic sciences, clinical psychology, nurse and rehabilitation sciences, occupational medicine.

 

How to register

In order to be enrolled in the PhD course, candidates must participate in a competition based on qualifications and exams; submit an application and a project proposal according to the procedures specified on the pages devoted to PhD Courses in the UNIFI website

 

Who can register

Admission to the PhD Course requires Master degree according to the current regulations or an equivalent qualification according to previous regulations, or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad. Possession of a degree in a scientific field is a preferential qualification

 

Description of the PhD Course activities

The course lasts three years. PhD students who have won places with a scholarship, without a scholarship or with a scholarship with a restricted topic can be enrolled in the Course, as reported in the announcement that is published annually on the University website.

 At the beginning of the course, the PhD students are assigned one or more tutors who take care of their cultural education and the performance of their scientific research activity in the frame of the PhD project.

The training program includes:

  • research activities within one of the research groups;
  • disciplinary and interdisciplinary training activities, with teaching proposals specifically established for the PhD Course;
  • training and research activities abroad, at qualified research centres.

The PhD students can also carry out teaching support activities and scientific dissemination and orientation activities

 

PhD degree

To obtain the degree, at the end of three years, PhD students present a written thesis that is judged by two external evaluators and thereafter defended under the evaluation of a special Examination Commission made of experts in the research field of the thesis.

The minimum length abroad duration period is 3 months
